The geographic location of Pamana and the airline hub at the Tocumen International Airport have drawn the attention of the Spanish Spanair Airline.
The airline company plans to start a flight frequency to Panama, as it is seeking a country where its passengers can make transfers to different destinations. The executives of Spanair gathered with Panamanian businessmen during the last Incentive Tourism Fair, held in the month of December in Barcelona -where the airline is headquartered.
During the meeting, both parties agreed that the Panamanian representatives would be managing the entire process along with Copa Airlines executives in order to schedule a meeting and discuss the possibility of establishing a codeshare agreement. Both airlines, Copa Airlines and Airline Spanair, are owned by Star Alliance, which will facilitate negotiations between companies.
Up to now, Iberia is the only Spanish airline that flies to Panama. Air Europa Lineas Areas was interested in incorporating a flight frequency to Panama. The airline even signed an agreement with the Panamanian government, but the negotiations were not closed, and the Tourism Authority of Panama ended up strengthening the relationship with Iberia.
